Dr. Tom Blume, the developer of the Identity Renegotiation approach to human problems and change, earned a Ph.D. in the COAMFTE-accredited Marital and Family Therapy program at Texas Tech University. His work has focused on divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies; families in adolescence; families in recovery; new couple relationships; and long-term relationships.
Dr. Blume is licensed in Michigan as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). He is a Clinical Fellow and an Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He is a Professor Emeritus and former Director of the postgraduate Couple and Family Counseling program at Oakland University and author of a graduate textbook on couple and family counseling published by John Wiley & Sons, as well as articles in professional journals and chapters in professional encyclopedias and handbooks. He has presented papers and workshops at dozens of local, state, national, and international conferences.
Dr. Blume served as Chair of the Family Therapy Section and the Inclusion and Diversity Committee of the National Council on Family relations and as a Board Member for the International Society for Mental Health Online; the Michigan Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; the Michigan Association for Family and Divorce Mediation; the MIchigan Interprofessional Association on Marriage, Divorce, and the Family; and the Michigan Council on Family Relations.
